LINCOLN — After a shaky start, the Pius X Thunderbolts reeled off four unanswered touchdowns and went on to defeat Crete 28-16 in a showdown of two playoff-bound teams Friday at Aldrich Field.
The Cardinals, who fell to 5-4 but had already unofficially qualified for a wild-card berth in the Class B playoff field, gained the fourth seed in the east bracket and will host 8-1 Omaha Gross Friday at 7 p.m. on Simon Field while Pius, 7-2, will host Gretna.
“I told our players that it’s a new season,” Crete head coach Chuck McGinnis said of his post-game remarks. “We deserve to be (in the playoffs) and we belong here. We’ve seen six of the eight teams in the east bracket, so anybody we see will be a rematch. Hopefully we’ll play our best football Friday night.”

Advance tickets for Friday’s first round Crete-Omaha Gross Class B playoff game are available for purchase at the Crete High School office, CHS activities director Jim Moore said Monday morning.
NSAA-mandated ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for students, and no passes will be honored by NSAA rule, Moore noted.
Simon Field gates will open to fans Friday at 5:30 p.m. and kick-off is set for 7.
