LAWRENCE — What started out as a season-opening foray against a perennially strong team with a new head coach quickly turned into a penalty-filled contest Friday night at Lawrence as Exeter-Milligan fought tooth-and-nail with Lawrence-Nelson before falling 18-8.
The T-Wolves struggled at times against the Lawrence-Nelson running game, the Raiders compiling 141 yards on the ground, while E-M held them to only 68 through the air, but those air yards proved to be one important catalyst (resulting in one touchdown).
The two teams added up a combined 33 penalties for 250 yards, at times on two or three consecutive plays, which was another factor in the contest.
E-M head coach Dean Filipi said the Raiders were more aggressive at different times throughout the contest and that made the difference against an Exeter-Milligan team that has only one returning starter this season.

WILBER — The first full week of the 2010 season was a tough one for the Wilber-Clatonia diamond girls as they dropped a pair of losses to North Bend Central 8-2 and Raymond Central 7-0 last Tuesday.
In Thursday’s home opener, the Wolverines were doing well until the fourth and fifth innings when Wahoo Neumann scored six runs en route to a 10-3 victory.
W-C head coach Keith Muller said the team didn’t have any lack of effort either of the three losses.
“I’m not sure what the difference between our first win and these three losses was, but all three teams were hitting well,” Muller said. “We did some very good things by making double plays and holding Raymond Central to no runs even though they had bases loaded with no outs.
“ The girls played hard and kept playing, but the hits just didn’t come,” he added.

BLADEN — Plenty of successful handoffs and passes weren’t quite enough Friday night as Dorchester opened its 2010 campaign on the road with a 23-14 loss to Silver Lake.
The Longhorns, who remained scoreless through three quarters, seemed to have a good mix of passing and rushing work during the game, according to Coach Ryan Voelker, but too many mistakes spelled disaster even through a successful fourth quarter.
“There were a lot of good things that happened, but mistakes — penalties, missed assignments, mental errors — cost us the game,” Voelker said. “The game was a building block as we can only get better from here.”
Quarterback Brandon Schwisow connected with Alec Lisec for a quick 10-yard gain early in the first quarter and runs from Brandon Stilwagon and Schwisow pushed them to near midfield, but the Silver Lake defense stepped up and knocked down a pair of passes to end the drive.
