Crete girls run past Pioneers

CreteGBB-fye_bradley-06webThe Crete High girls’ basketball team drubbed Nebraska City 66-22 a week ago Tuesday in the Crete High gym in what was to have been just the start of another three-game week.

But Mother Nature changed all of that, as Crete’s games at Schuyler Friday and against Waverly Saturday were called off by the return of winter to the area.

The Schuyler game has not been rescheduled, while the Waverly contest has been postponed to Tuesday (Feb. 14) with a 6 p.m. tip-off in the Crete High gym.

The Cardinals, ranked No. 9 in Class B by the Journal Star last week, were 11-7 going into a home game against Hastings Tuesday and will travel to Aurora Friday for a 7:45 tip.

The Cardinals took a 20-2 lead over the Pioneers after one quarter Tuesday and continued to pour it on in their most lopsided win of the season to date.

Alex Edwards scored the Cardinals’ first six points and Morgan Hill added six more before the first quarter buzzer. Crete created numerous transition opportunities with steals and outlet passes.

Hill totaled 11 by halftime and Kaitlin Bradley added 10 as the Cards took a 33-8 halftime lead over the 2-13 Pioneers.
