Avenging their early exit to the Central Conference tournament a week earlier, the Crete High boys’ basketball team edged tournament champions Grand Island Northwest 57-55 Jan. 31 at Grand Island in their only action of the week.

The Cardinals, 8-8 going into a home game with Hastings Tuesday, had a road game at Schuyler Friday and a home game with Waverly Saturday both canceled by the snowstorm that hit the state.

The Schuyler game does not figure to be rescheduled, but the Waverly contest has been postponed to next Tuesday (Feb. 14) with a 7:45 p.m. start. The Cardinals travel to Aurora Friday and will tip off at 6.

Down by 13 at halftime and by as many as seven points in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals completed a wild overtime comeback victory a week ago Tuesday over the just-crowned conference tourney champs on their home floor.

“This was a great win for us,” Crete coach Brent Cole said. “We talked about how it could be an opportunity for us to play the conference (tournament) champs and let people know that we feel we are one of the best teams in our conference also.”

Derek McGinnis scored six of his game-high 25 points in the extra period on three buckets to boost Crete to the win.
